When you’re getting ready to move, you’ve likely heard that it’s a good idea to label your boxes with what’s inside and which room they belong to. While that helps, written labels can be hard to spot or read during all the moving chaos. A simple and clever option is to use color-coded packing tape to show where each box should go. If you’re thinking about using this method, here are a few easy tips to follow:
- Choose a different color of packing tape for each room. For instance, red can be for the kitchen and green for the master bedroom. Let your kids help pick colors for each space—they might have fun doing it. Make sure you also assign colors for areas like the master bathroom, guest bathroom, kids’ rooms, guest room, living room and laundry room. If you’re storing some items, pick a separate color just for storage boxes.
- As you pack, keep enough rolls of each color of tape nearby. You don’t want to stop everything to go buy more. And if you use the wrong color because you ran out, it could cause a lot of confusion when you’re unpacking later!
- Even if you’re using colored tape, it’s still a good idea to write what’s inside each box on the flap. That way, if you need something right away—like your pots and pans to cook dinner—you’ll know exactly which box to look for.
- Create a master list. Stick a piece of each colored tape on a piece of paper and write down which room each color represents. Then, hang several copies of this list around your new home so the movers can easily see where each box should go.
- Put a piece of the matching colored tape on the door of each room. Movers—and even friends helping you—might not know which room is the kids’ or which one is the office or guest room. This easy step makes it clear where everything should go.
- Place tape on more than one side of each box. When movers are unloading the truck, it can be annoying if they have to turn every box to find the tape. To make it easier, put a piece of tape on all sides. Just make sure the tape is big enough to clearly show the color.
