Taking your wine collection with you when moving can be a bit tricky. But with the right approach and tools, you can get it done safely. No matter how big or small your collection is shipping wine doesn’t have to be hard or stressful if you follow some helpful tips.
Get an Appraisal
Before you move, it’s a good idea to find out how much your wine collection is worth. This way, if anything gets damaged during the move, you can file a claim for it. If you’re not sure where to get an appraisal, try asking your local wine shop or distributor for a recommendation.
Get the Right Packing Materials
If you’re on a budget, you can wrap your wine bottles in paper or bubble wrap, place them in regular boxes and fill the empty spaces with more paper. But the best option is to use wine boxes that are specially designed for this. They make the whole packing and shipping process easier and safer.
Finish What’s Open
Only pack sealed wine bottles, since open ones can spill. It’s best to drink any open bottles before you move.
Inspect the Corks
Make sure the corks on your wine bottles are snug so they don’t come loose while moving. If you’re worried about them popping out, you can buy cork cages for added safety.
Strengthen the Bottom of the Boxes
If you think the boxes might not be strong enough, place 2–3 extra layers of cardboard at the bottom before you start packing. Then, use extra tape to keep everything secure.
Avoid Standing Bottles Upright
Corks need to stay moist which is why wine bottles are usually stored on their sides. When you’re shipping wine, place corked bottles on their sides or with the cork facing down.
Pay Attention to the Temperature
Wine stays in the best shape at around 55°F. If you’re moving just a few bottles, use a regular vehicle. For a larger collection, go with a climate-controlled van to keep the wine at a steady temperature.
Contact the Alcohol Control Office in your New State
Find out if you’re allowed to bring wine with you and ask if there are any rules or limits you need to follow.
